I Dreamt of Fire

Immersive Audiovisual Performance · 2026 Presented at Gare Du Nord, Basel; Dampfzentrale, Bern

I Dreamt of Fire is an immersive audiovisual performance set within the bureaucratic atmosphere of waiting rooms. Through digital simulation and hallucinatory visual language, the work explores pervasive feelings of fear and uncertainty as lived experiences rather than abstract conditions.

The performance combines a tense, evolving soundscape with oscillating visual states, moving through cycles of anxiety, anticipation, and release. Fire operates as a central metaphor throughout the work: a force capable of destruction and consumption, but also of warmth, light, and renewal. Through this duality, the piece navigates emotional instability as something that can be endured, transformed, and ultimately accepted.

Developed using real-time game engines for simulation alongside TouchDesigner for live audiovisual performance, the work integrates generative visual systems with an evolving sound architecture. The audience is seated within a constructed waiting room, positioned to face one another and subtly compelled into shared eye contact. Each attendee is issued a numbered ticket and asked to wait for their number to be called — a call that never arrives. The project was conceived in collaboration with Marie Delprat; while the concept was developed together, Lane shaped the visual world and narrative structure, and Delprat composed the musical score.

Developed at 180 Degrees (Sofia) and Casa di Rosa (Loco). Supported by Fachausschuss Musik BS/BL and Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council.
